The American truism, “Freedom is not free,” may be familiar to most people. However, it might be interesting to know that this concept is also found in the Bible, and it has personal implications. The Gospel of Jesus Christ proclaims genuine and lasting freedom for all sinners who will trust in the person and work of Christ, but this freedom was costly. Additionally, the state of freedom that all Christians enjoy seems to be under constant assault from all angles. The Christian who honestly assesses his or her thoughts, words, and deeds may find that bondage and isolation are both lurking ever so closely. Where may real freedom be enjoyed? How may such freedom be maintained? This is the subject addressed in this passage.
