Genesis | PATIENTLY EXPECTING THE KING
Series: Genesis: It All Begins Here
Both Jacob and Joseph died in Egypt. The promise they had from God was a great inheritance, but their earthly lives did not last long enough to see it. Strangers in the land of promise had become pilgrims in a foreign kingdom, and yet they heard and believed the promises of God. “There is coming a King! His kingdom shall never end, and He will come from Israel.” This promise rings out at the close of Genesis, and it is a reiteration of the promise God made at the very beginning (Gen. 3:15). The conquering King, who would make all things new by bruising the head of that ancient serpent, was the hope of all those who believed and feared God. The same is true today, but we have the marvelous benefit of looking back to the King who did actually conquer. Jesus Christ is now making all things new, and those who believe and fear God are patiently expecting this coming King.

- Nov 13, 2016Genesis | An Allegorical Gospel
Nov 13, 2016Genesis | An Allegorical GospelSeries: Genesis: It All Begins HereThere are many stories in the Bible. All of the historical accounts of other people who have gone on before provide us with much to consider. We may learn lessons from their victories and their defeats; and we may learn much about the nature of life under the sun. However, in the story of Joseph and his brothers, we may learn more than simple life-lessons. In this story we see a picture of the Gospel and the sinner’s response to it. Here we have a real-life allegory for better understanding what it means that God offers grace and mercy to sinners in need. Let us watch the story unfold, and may God help us find ourselves in it.

Nov 6, 2016Genesis | The God Who Demotes And PromotesSeries: Genesis: It All Begins HereThe United States presidential election has cause no small amount of discomfort in America. Oct 23, 2016Genesis | An Unlikely SaviorSeries: Genesis: It All Begins HereIn Genesis 37 we dive into the story of Joseph. Joseph is an interesting character in his own right, but he is exceptionally interesting as we begin to understand that Joseph is also meant to throw our eyes upward towards Christ. Joseph suffers great defeat and wins victory through the most unlikely set of circumstances. As we see the events of Joseph’s life unfold, we are also able to see incredible parallels to the life of Christ. Jesus Christ is the ultimate victorious sufferer, and He conquers death by dying. We learn here that God is telling the story of Jesus, long before He actually reveals the fullness of the unlikely Savior.
- Oct 16, 2016Genesis | A Tragic Legacy
Oct 16, 2016Genesis | A Tragic LegacySeries: Genesis: It All Begins HereIn every sermon, we try to ask and answer the question, "What does God intend to teach us by including this passage in sacred Scripture?” In some passages this question is easy to answer, and in others it is a not quite so simple. Sometimes, the answer to such a question is very difficult. Genesis Chapter 36 is probably not widely read among most Christians, and it is even less widely understood. However, there is actually a very profound and thoroughly biblical message here for those who will hear it. First, there is an obvious (at least once you slow down enough to consider it) contrast between Esau’s worldly success and Jacob’s lack thereof. And second, the contrast between worldly power and God’s rule that far exceeds it is a major theme throughout the Bible. In this message we will discuss Esau’s example and the implications of it on our lives.
- Aug 28, 2016Genesis | A People From A Man
Aug 28, 2016Genesis | A People From A ManSeries: Genesis: It All Begins HereA mass of humanity is represented in Jacob, and he is truly the father of a nation. Many individuals became a notable people, and they all may trace their origin to this man. Like Jacob, Adam is also a man from whom a people have emerged. Humanity owes its origin to this one man. Adam, however, is not usually viewed in positive light, because his representation of humanity was the quintessential bad representation. And yet, there was a “second Adam” who represented humanity well. Jesus Christ is the better representative, and He too creates a people for Himself. Those who love and trust in Christ, are a people from a man, and we shall consider the depths of this profound reality in this message.
- Aug 14, 2016Genesis | God’s Prevailing Promise
Aug 14, 2016Genesis | God’s Prevailing PromiseSeries: Genesis: It All Begins HereIsaac, like Abraham, was blessed by God. Isaac’s son, Jacob, also enjoyed the blessing of God. However, when we read the account of the “life and times” of these men, we do not see picturesque examples of godliness and fidelity. Instead, we see the same expressions of sinful human nature that we observe in all people everywhere. In such a display, we are reminded of what it really means that God is gracious. God’s gracious blessing is based on (you guessed it) grace. In this message we will look at the dysfunction of sinful humanity and the grace by which God blesses sinners.
- Jul 31, 2016Genesis | The Lord Keeps His Promises
Jul 31, 2016Genesis | The Lord Keeps His PromisesSeries: Genesis: It All Begins HereIn our day, it is very common for adults to admit high levels of anxiety and depression. Such things are complicated topics, but at the core of both is the experience and/or anticipation of unmet expectations. The Bible is not silent about expectations, and God is repeatedly affirmed as superbly faithful. In fact, Abraham was blessed by God beyond measure, and God’s faithfulness was on display time after time in Abraham’s life. In this message we will look at a specific time when God’s faithfulness took center stage, and we will consider the implications of God’s promises and His fidelity for us today.
- Jul 24, 2016Genesis | Rescue from the City of Destruction
Jul 24, 2016Genesis | Rescue from the City of DestructionSeries: Genesis: It All Begins HereThe events surrounding the destruction of great ancient cities are fascinating and sobering. Sodom and Gomorrah are notorious cities, and even non-Christians know something of the biblical storyline. However, the big picture does not focus on what the distracted reader might think. In fact, it may surprise you that this is a story of God’s gracious ability to save in the midst of awful judgment. In this message, we will look at the way the whole Bible understands the account of Sodom and Gomorrah, and we will hear a message of both warning and rescue.

Jun 12, 2016Genesis | Remeber the Smoke and the FlameSeries: Genesis: It All Begins HereFrom the very beginning, the Bible tells humans how they may have right relationship with God. God’s word comes in the form of a promise or “covenant,” and humans are to respond with belief and trust. God is the author and actor on the stage of accomplishment, and those who experience God’s blessing are simply those who trust in Him. God does the work, He applies it, and He promises blessing to those who love and trust Him. This is true from Genesis to Revelation, and it is true from the beginning of creation to eternity.
