Genesis | A People From A Man
A mass of humanity is represented in Jacob, and he is truly the father of a nation. Many individuals became a notable people, and they all may trace their origin to this man. Like Jacob, Adam is also a man from whom a people have emerged. Humanity owes its origin to this one man. Adam, however, is not usually viewed in positive light, because his representation of humanity was the quintessential bad representation. And yet, there was a “second Adam” who represented humanity well. Jesus Christ is the better representative, and He too creates a people for Himself. Those who love and trust in Christ, are a people from a man, and we shall consider the depths of this profound reality in this message.

    Wisdom Begins With Respect
The average person is unlikely to say that they do not want to be wise, but the average person is also unlikely to do anything in pursuit of real wisdom. This contradiction provides the very evidence of lacking wisdom among many people today. There are many intelligent and many experienced people around us, but we are often amazed when we encounter someone with wisdom. What is wisdom? Do some people just have it, while others don’t? How can we improve our own level of wisdom? And, where does the Gospel fit into all of this? These are the questions we seek to answer in this message from the opening verses of Proverbs.

    Genesis | God’s Prevailing Promise
Isaac, like Abraham, was blessed by God. Isaac’s son, Jacob, also enjoyed the blessing of God. However, when we read the account of the “life and times” of these men, we do not see picturesque examples of godliness and fidelity. Instead, we see the same expressions of sinful human nature that we observe in all people everywhere. In such a display, we are reminded of what it really means that God is gracious. God’s gracious blessing is based on (you guessed it) grace. In this message we will look at the dysfunction of sinful humanity and the grace by which God blesses sinners.

Genesis | The Lord Keeps His Promises
In our day, it is very common for adults to admit high levels of anxiety and depression. Such things are complicated topics, but at the core of both is the experience and/or anticipation of unmet expectations. The Bible is not silent about expectations, and God is repeatedly affirmed as superbly faithful. In fact, Abraham was blessed by God beyond measure, and God’s faithfulness was on display time after time in Abraham’s life. In this message we will look at a specific time when God’s faithfulness took center stage, and we will consider the implications of God’s promises and His fidelity for us today.

Genesis | Rescue from the City of Destruction
The events surrounding the destruction of great ancient cities are fascinating and sobering. Sodom and Gomorrah are notorious cities, and even non-Christians know something of the biblical storyline. However, the big picture does not focus on what the distracted reader might think. In fact, it may surprise you that this is a story of God’s gracious ability to save in the midst of awful judgment. In this message, we will look at the way the whole Bible understands the account of Sodom and Gomorrah, and we will hear a message of both warning and rescue.

Laying Your Cares Before the Lord
Michael Pettiette explained two separate occasions when Hezekiah, one of the kings of Judah, responded to the concerns of life. First, Hezekiah responded with humility and trust in God. But then, he seems to think more highly of the relationship he might have with a Babylonian king rather than his relationship to God.

Of course, as Michael considered on Sunday, we too can often vacillate between trust in God and relying more on earthly powers and relationships.

    Life On Missions

Cody Howard shared his story of “Life on Mission,” and the Gospel motivation for that kind of life. Cody is not a super Christian, nor does the Bible advocate for only some Christians to engage the world around them for the sake of the Gospel and the glory of Christ.

All Christians are to live their lives on “mission,” but we must understand the many and diverse ways that Christians can do just that. This handout is intended to help us to think through this general concept (Life on Mission), and to help us apply ourselves to living as lights in the world.

    Living With Open Hands
"He is no fool who loses what he cannot keep in order to gain what he cannot lose.” Jim Elliot spoke these words from a steely resolve to live a life utterly given to Christ and others. He was determined to make Christ known to a people who were abysmally lost in sin and ignorant of the Gospel. Jim did lose his mortal life at the murderous hands of the very people he endeavored to evangelize, but the Gospel broke in upon this dark tribe in spite of such a grievous loss. Jim gained an eternal reward, and a tribe of sinners gained a Gospel hearing. May God create in all Christians the same kind of resolve – to live a life utterly given to Christ and others.

Genesis | Remeber the Smoke and the Flame
From the very beginning, the Bible tells humans how they may have right relationship with God. God’s word comes in the form of a promise or “covenant,” and humans are to respond with belief and trust. God is the author and actor on the stage of accomplishment, and those who experience God’s blessing are simply those who trust in Him. God does the work, He applies it, and He promises blessing to those who love and trust Him. This is true from Genesis to Revelation, and it is true from the beginning of creation to eternity.
